Veronica’s story of perseverance and hope

Veronica managed to stay optimistic even during her toughest times. As a single mother from a rural town in Australia, facing domestic violence, homelessness and unemployment, Veronica reached out to her community for support to keep moving forward. Where many might have lost hope, Veronica stayed focused on finding safety and stability for herself and her 15-year-old son.

“It definitely takes a toll on you. It was pretty daunting, but you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do. Like any challenge, you have to just move ahead and face it,” Veronica said.

Rebuilding a foundation in these moments can make all the difference, and that’s where Jodie Langdon from IntoJobs (part of the IntoWork Group) was able to provide assistance. Jodie connected Veronica with the support she needed from Anglicare, Centrecare and her Community Neighbourhood Centre.  Through this network of services, Veronica was offered temporary accommodation and the opportunity to feel safe and to put a plan in place.

Jodie also referred Veronica to a program called Matchfit which offers participants a safe environment to identify personal barriers, build confidence and share each other’s stories. Veronica said it was the personal interactions within the group that she valued most.

“It was brilliant. It just gave me more of a positive outlook. It was well presented and listening to the personal challenges and issues the other guys were going through – and how they overcame them – it just makes you realise that you’re not alone,” she said.

With renewed confidence and Jodie’s ongoing support, Veronica began applying for jobs and soon secured casual employment as a room attendant at a local motel. Jodie said she’s been amazed by Veronica’s courage and that her determination to succeed has enabled her to move on from her troubled past.

“For most people, those experiences can be crushing, but Veronica has never seemed to dwell on her situation or give up hope. She’s always had a strong belief she’d get through this stage and is fiercely focused on creating a bright future for her son.” Jodie said.

Veronica is clearly grateful to IntoJobs, for Jodie’s guidance and all the support she’s had from her community. She understands that there are times when you need to call out for help. Yet the driving force behind Veronica’s progress has been her ability to stay focused on her goals and draw from her own inner strength.

“When there are other people there to help you out, you’ve got to work as a team together. I’m feeling pretty positive. I often remind myself there are many people who are far worse off than I am. So, I don’t stop. I just keep going. I have to.”
